Vilém Blodek (1834-1874)
Information about the composer Vilém Blodek and his operas.
Vilém Blodek was a professor at the Prague Conservatory, where he taught the flute. Apart from that, he was a concert pianist and the head of several Prague choirs. Blodek's compositional output was modest, and was influenced by F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and Blodek's own contemporary, B. Smetana. However, this production contained the impression of original lyricism and poeticism, and excels in its instrumentation. The Concert for Flute and Orchestra in D Major and the opera V studni (In the Well) are the most meaningful of his works. He also wrote songs and church and incidental music, and revised and scored classic works.
